Skills you’ll learn
Explore various ways of image-making through the lens of illustration. Assignments will model real-world projects such as editorials, advertising, book covers, and other relevant genres.
You will learn about the principles and elements of design, workflow, illustration marketing (as a freelancer), style trends, as well as analog and digital illustration techniques and software. Sections of the course will be devoted to helping you develop your creativity and personal branding.
Telling stories through your illustrations in a functional and meaningful way underlies this course. Whether it’s through motion, narrative, sequential, or conceptual, whatever the format, you will be able to express it via analog, digital, or both.
Three great assets an artist or designer can possess are openness, curiosity, and playfulness. My intention is for you to find ways to include illustration as part of your design arsenal. You will leave this course with several finished illustrations as well as knowledge of how to incorporate visual storytelling into your creative practice.

Marcos Chin’s illustrations tell stories. They have appeared as surface and wall art, textile designs, animation, advertisements, fashion catalogues, magazines, book covers and public artwork. He has worked with such companies as Starbucks, Apple, Google, Target, YouTube, Time, Honda, GQ, and The New York Times. He’s given lectures and workshops internationally and teaches Illustration at the School of Visual Arts, in NYC. Although he spends most of his time drawing, during his downtime he loves to write, cook (and eat!) as well as exercise. On weekends you’ll often find Marcos roaming around different NYC neighbourhoods with his partner and little brown dog, Shalby.
