Overview

This course is the first advanced step in calculus, also called mathematical analysis, and serves as a bridge from discrete to continuous. It deals with limits of sequences and continuity, differentiation and integration of functions. We will introduce and explore elementary concepts and methods of calculus. For each of them, a geometric interpretation is given as a key for better understanding. We will see how these concepts are applied by considering examples and by solving numerous exercises. By calculating limits, derivatives and integrals, we will also analyze such properties of functions as monotonicity and extrema, which have applications in many sciences.

Learning highlights

  • The course’s objective is to familiarise with the basic notions and ideas of calculus.
  • You will learn how to calculate the limit of a sequence, how to find a derivative and an integral of a function when it is possible.
  • This course is also a background preparation for studying probability.

Methodology

Each three-hour session will consist partly of a lecture given by the professor and partly of a practical session. This practical session is where students will try to solve problems (related to the subject of the day) under the professor's supervision with some classroom discussion. To further improve the understanding of the taught material, homework is assigned after every session. There will also be two interim tests after each of the first two weeks and a final exam at the end of the module.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
10% - In-class participation
30% - Homework assignments
20% - Midterm tests (two, each consisting of 10% of the final grade)
40% - Final Exam (a test and a project)
