Overview

This is a crash course on algebra and number theory. We will start by refreshing basic useful notions such as ratio, percents and proportions, and will explain how to manipulate them and apply them to practical problems. Then we will consider arithmetic and geometric sequences, finding formulas for summing first several terms of such sequences. A large part of the course will be dedicated to modular arithmetic, including the Euclidean algorithms and applications to cryptography.

Learning highlights

  • The goal of the course is to provide the necessary background in elementary algebra.
  • On one hand we will recall algebraic notions already seen in high school, on the other hand, we will try to deepen understanding and see them from the perspective of a university level.

Final Exam

Methodology

Each three-hour session will consist partly of a lecture given by the professor and partly of a practical session, where students will try to solve problems (related to the subject of the day) under the professor's supervision. There will also be some classroom discussion. In order to further improve understanding of the taught material, homework will be assigned after every session. There will be two interim tests after each of the first two weeks, and a final exam at the end of the module.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
10% - In-class participation
30% - Homework assignments
20% - Midterm tests (two, each consisting of 10% of the final grade)
40% - Final Exam
