Overview

This course applies interaction design fundamentals to portfolio-ready prototypes through a combination of lectures, in-class workshops, and critiques.

  • There will be lectures on both historical and contemporary interaction design concepts, as well as discussions on the future of interaction design and XR.
  • Concepts from these lectures will serve as the basis for group discussion and project assignments.
  • Craftsmanship and practical skills:
  • We will cover best-in-craft practices for various types of project deliverables and how to be an effective cross-functional collaborator.
  • We will also consider designs for a variety of audiences, with an emphasis on usability and accessibility.
  • Critique and presentations:
  • There will be active discussion and in-class critiques on ongoing projects.
  • We will consider and hone presentation skills for different types of design deliverables, including overarching visions, pitches, and functional designs.

Prerequisites

Open to all design skill levels. Students with prior design experience can expand projects to include more components.

Methodology

The format for this class will be a mix of lectures, workshops, student presentations, and critique.

This course is for students who want to explore a wide variety of interaction design projects, from large-scale holistic design systems to micro-interactions. Students will walk away from this class with a foundational understanding of interaction design and the history of the field, while also putting those concepts into action in the form of tangible designs and prototypes.

There will be themes per lecture and discussion, with a correlating project. There will be in-class workshops as well as projects assigned for outside class time.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
35% - Participation
35% - Projects
30% - Craftsmanship and Polish

Jaclyn is a designer working across visual design, user experience, interface design, and design direction for a variety of interactive mediums (websites, products, tools, games) over the past decade.

She’s a multidisciplinary-multitasker type: passionate for solving complex problems through design strategy and craftsmanship as a design lead, leading a team of designers as design director, or teaching the art of interaction design to college students as a professor.
