In the digital era, desktop and smartphone apps have been an area of heavy focus. However, thanks to rapid evolution within the entertainment industry and a strong push from TV manufacturers to produce more and more powerful devices, TV applications are becoming a fast-growing field in the sector of internet businesses.
This trend opens a plethora of new opportunities within the industry, in a number of specializations but more specifically for designers, as there are plenty of new interaction patterns and design principles to explore.
Designing for TV means designing for media consumers, and this requires that product designers understand user demands and become sensitive to shifting patterns in the consumption of television content.
In 2018, 193 million Smart TVs were sold worldwide. All of the major players, including Netflix, Apple, Disney and Rakuten, have shifted their focus and are pushing the boundaries of their content distribution platforms.
For these reasons, TV app design has become an exciting new field for any Digital Product Designer.
