Overview

This course will give students practical tools and teach them methodologies for creating digital products and services that touch people’s lives. They will learn to experience the world from a different perspective to identify and understand people's needs and stories, uncover innovative solutions, and make sense of the world by prototyping and iterating on our wildest ideas.

The module will build on concepts related to user research, problem framing, ideation, prototyping, user testing, and how to effectively communicate your design decisions through experience principles and storytelling.

Learning highlights

  • In this class, students will learn the fundamentals of becoming an experienced designer and a world explorer. They will acquire a sharp mindset for understanding their surroundings, framing problems, and transforming abstract concepts into tangible experiences that move an audience to action and emotion
  • Students are expected to gain understand and proficiency in the following areas:
  • How to apply research methods to understand the problem space.
  • Sense making: synthesis between user and experience frameworks.

Prerequisites

The course is open to anyone, but it’s a plus if you know:

Basic knowledge of research / service methods.

Basic knowledge of visual / interaction design.

Knowledge of design tools (ex Figma, Sketch, Keynote, Adobe Suite ,etc.).

Methodology

The class will be a mix of short lectures, open discussions, and group assignments, where students will be asked to go through the design and creative process to research, ideate, design, and validate new solutions based on an initial brief.

This course will consist of:

Subject matter lectures.

Group collaboration and ideation.

In-class guided work sessions.

Industry cases and relevant recommended reading.

Group projects and presentation.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
25% - Active participation in the open discussions.
25% - Understanding and application of the creative process.
25% - Ability to collaborate with others in a team.
25% - Critical thinking, storytelling and presentation of their design solutions.
Through a series of small assignments, students will have the opportunity to collaborate in small teams and demonstrate their ability to invent and design innovative experiences. Projects will be presented and discussed as a group, and evaluated based on the understanding of the problem space, simplicity and elegance of their solutions, differentiated value proposition and innovation. In addition, each student will be evaluated based on their: Active participation in the open discussions. Understanding and application of the creative process. Ability to collaborate with others in a team. Critical thinking, storytelling and presentation of their design solutions

Hiram is a multidisciplinary designer working across interaction design, film, product, art direction, and creative strategy. Passionate about designing experiences and stories that connect to people. With over 10+ years of experience in the creative industry, Hiram has worked with innovative and forward-thinking organizations in North America and Europe, leading multidisciplinary teams with the ideology of constant learning, experimentation, and willingness to design for the benefit of humanity and the impact of businesses in a rapidly changing world.

He has a background in digital arts and multimedia business. From there, he found his passion for storytelling which combines with different disciplines such as technology & human-centered design to translate innovative solutions that are viable, enjoyable, and impactful.
