Overview

During this course you will learn the essentials and practicalities of starting a company, how to use the business model canvas and lean startup to work out your value proposition, how to validate your idea and how to take the next steps in launching your company. We’ll use best practices learned by Don Ritzen, who’s invested in over 150 early stage businesses. Although 35% of them failed, 65% are still growing, and some of them even generate tens of millions of revenue.

Finally, we’ll focus on helping you develop a top performing team and developing individual leadership, which is the #1 reason for both success and failure.

Learning highlights

  • Understanding the top reasons startups fail, so you (hopefully) won’t make the same mistakes
  • Learning about Lean Startup, why it’s important, build-measure-learn principle & pivoting
  • Learning the must-have roles to have on your team
  • Learning the essentials of how to create a high performing team by the Pyramid of Lencioni

  • Learning how to ask questions during customer-interviews the “right way” and create your own list of interview questions
  • Conduct 10-15 customer interviews for your company to get insights on what type of product to build

Prerequisites

Entry requirements: You have to have an idea that you’re excited about and have worked on in order to enter this course. Furthermore, you have to prepare a 90-second pitch of your idea that needs to include: what problem are you solving, who your customer is, what the solution is, what the business model is and why you are excited about this idea.

Ideally you enter this course not by yourself but with a team; meaning that you have 2 or 3 persons in your team from either design or technology bachelor or master that take this course with you. You can also do this course by yourself, but it will be more beneficial for the development of your capstone if you do it with more people in your team.

If you’re not a Master student or not a third year bachelor student, you have to officially apply to enter this course. Applications consist of max. 2-page essay on the following 3 points: 1. What you expect to get out of this course 2. Why you want to become an entrepreneur 3. Short description of your idea including what problem are you solving, who your customer is, what the solution is, what the business model is and why you are excited about this idea.
