Overview
Mathematics is the language of science, engineering, and computing. While school mathematics focuses on computation and techniques, university mathematics emphasizes abstraction, logical reasoning, and mathematical proof.
This course bridges that transition by introducing the language and foundations of higher mathematics, including sets, functions, proof techniques, combinatorics, and elementary number theory. Students will develop the mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for further study.
By the end of the course, students will be prepared for subsequent courses in calculus, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, graph theory, probability, and other mathematically intensive subjects.
Learning highlights
- Master essential concepts such as sets, functions, and their properties
- Develop proficiency in key proof techniques
- Build skills in combinatorics, elementary number theory, vectors, polynomials, and complex numbers
- Strengthen logical reasoning, abstraction, and clear mathematical communication

Prerequisites
There are no special prerequisites for this course. A solid background in high school mathematics is recommended.
Methodology
The course combines lectures, guided problem-solving, interactive discussions, individual practice, and collaborative group activities. Each session introduces new concepts through worked examples, followed by exercises designed to develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Active participation is an essential component of the course. Students will regularly discuss solution strategies, present and explain their reasoning, and work in groups to compare different approaches.
As mathematical proof is a central theme, students are expected to explain the reasoning behind their solutions rather than simply present final answers. This approach encourages the thoughtful and responsible use of AI tools. The ability to communicate and justify a solution clearly is considered an integral part of understanding the underlying mathematics.
