Overview

This fast-paced three-week course is your introduction to the world of frictionless experience of designing and documenting products, through hands-on skills with industry-standard tools. You'll gain practical skills in FigJam and Figma, learning how to leverage these tools to articulate your designs and navigate the entire product development cycle. We’ll focus on techniques for using these tools to design and document user flows, build UIs, and create prototypes, ensuring you develop a core understanding of seamless teamwork. The course culminates in a collaborative team project where you'll apply these tool-based skills to construct a simple design system, document, and present design flows, ultimately crafting an essential skill set for your emerging portfolio.

Learning highlights

  • Understanding which types of design documentation are appropriate at various stages of the product development cycle (e.g. kickoff, UX, UI, and handoff), and how specific tools support these interactions and collaborative workflows.
  • Effectively documenting core UX elements and articulating design decisions, such as constructing information architecture and user flows using FigJam.
  • Using Figma’s core tools and Auto Layout feature to build adaptable user interface screens efficiently, and learning how to document design details clearly.
  • Creating simple interactive prototypes in Figma to visualise and communicate user journeys and basic UI functionality.
  • Articulating the benefits of design consistency and understanding the purpose and value of a design system.
  • Building foundational design system elements—such as design tokens and reusable components with variants—directly in Figma.
  • Applying documentation strategies within Figma files by organising flows, screens, and components to enable a seamless handoff.
  • Collaborating effectively within a design team by distributing roles and managing shared design files in Figma and FigJam, maintaining consistency and streamlining the design and documentation process.
  • Integrating a design system into a collaborative project and demonstrating its practical application for consistent and efficient design creation.
  • Structuring and presenting a team design project as during a handoff: showcasing the design process, comprehensive documentation, and collaborative outcomes achieved through tool proficiency.
