Overview

Motion design is a discipline that takes graphic design principles and applies them to video production through the use of animation and visual effects. From the analogue experimental films of the 1920s to the digital interfaces we interact with today, the development of motion design has always been closely tied to development in technology. It is an exciting field that combines animation and graphic design principles with new cutting-edge technologies.

Learning highlights

  • Introduce students to the fundamentals of animation and train students to think like an animator
  • Students will learn to problem-solve with animation and demonstrate appropriate use of visual design principles
  • Students will experiment with a variety of animation techniques (shapes, typography, images, videos)

Prerequisites

Because of how fast-paced the class will be, it’ll be super beneficial for the students to watch these After Effects overview videos and try out After Effects before the first class.

Have After Effects Installed and make sure your computers have enough free space as well.

Basic understanding of Photoshop, Illustrator or similar programs like Figma or Sketch.

Animations take time to create, so time management outside of class will be important.

Methodology

3 weekly projects. (concept, storyboard, design, animation, and presentation)

Project 1: Colour Organ - Animate geometric composition to sound

Project 2: Transitions - Transition between different typography focused layouts

Project 3: UI Animations - Applying animation techniques to user interface designs

Hands-on demos and exercises

Small group and whole class project critiques

Lectures covering topics and motion history relating to the week’s project

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
15% - Project Designs
15% - Project Rough cuts
60% - Project Finals
10% - Participation
Students will be graded on 3 weekly projects. - Not just graded on the final animations, but also on effort, participation, and process. - Turning each assignment in before the stated deadlines (sketches, designs, rough cuts, motion tests, and final renders) - Following the delivery spec requirements

Over the years, Po has solved problems through design and motion with clients such as Google, Meister, Duolingo, Squarespace, Airbnb, Buck, and others.
