Overview

Few art forms blend the digital and physical worlds as seamlessly as interactive installations. This module will show you the basics of a practice that combines different disciplines to create unforgettable experiences. You will learn how to ideate, design and build installations while looking at old, new and future technologies that enable the magic. Students will take part in hands-on group exercises and prototype their own interactive installation.

Prerequisites

Basic level of interaction design

Basic level of visual design

Basic knowledge of design tools (Photoshop, Sketch, Figma, Illustrator)

Knowing how to code (Javascript) will be helpful but is not required

Methodology

Each class will be a combination of lectures, demonstrations, discussions and group working sessions.

Students will work in groups to create an interactive installation concept and prototype throughout the three weeks of the module - in and outside of class.

Week one: The basics - how to ideate and present viable installation concepts

Week two: Zooming in - the technologies behind the magic

Week three: Zooming out - the details that make it or break it

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
30% - Participation
30% - Project: Installation concept
40% - Project: presentation & documentation

Technical Director / Co-Founder at Red Paper Heart

Daniel is the co-founder and technology director of Red Paper Heart, a Brooklyn-based design studio specializing in interactive experiences that inspire joy and wonder. Since 2011 Red Paper Heart explores the potential of new technologies by combining physical activity and art in novel ways to create award-winning installations for clients such as Google, Ford and HBO.

Always interested in art and math, Daniel found his love for interactive technologies early on. He studied Multimedia Design and Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, Germany. Before founding Red Paper Heart, Daniel was a senior developer at Big Spaceship in New York. After more than a decade in the United States, Daniel moved back to Europe in 2020.

Yes. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate signed by the director of the program your course belonged to.
