Overview

This course explores the intersection of data visualisation and digital products, focusing on data visualisation for responsive dashboards and small-screen interfaces (from mobile to smartwatch). Through hands-on sessions, students will learn to structure, clean and visualise data effectively using Figma and RAWGraphs. They will explore chart selection, visual hierarchy, data visualisation and interactive elements to create intuitive dashboards.

Working in teams, participants will design a fully responsive dashboard, adapting visualisations for multiple devices while applying best practices in data visualisation, accessibility, responsiveness and usability. The course includes lectures, practical exercises, chartability testing and iterative design processes, culminating in a final presentation.

By the end, students will master data visualisation for digital products, gaining the skills to build engaging, interactive visualisations for real-world applications.

Learning highlights

  • Fundamentals of Data Visualisation – Learn how to structure, clean, and visualise data effectively.
  • Chart Selection & Visual Encoding – Apply best practices in choosing the right visual representation for different data types.
  • Data Visualisation for UI/UX – Design dashboards and micro-visualisations for various screen sizes.
  • Prototyping & Testing – Create high-fidelity data-driven prototypes and refine them based on user feedback.
  • Project Development – Collaborate in teams to design and present a fully responsive data visualisation dashboard.

Prerequisites

Beginner to Intermediate (no programming skills required).

While a background in graphic design and data visualisation is helpful, it is not mandatory.

Tools to Download & Explore Before the Course: Figma – figma.com (Sign up for a free account and explore the interface)

Example Dashboards to Look At: Strava Running Dashboard – Analyse how Strava visualises running data in a web/mobile app. Apple Health & Garmin Connect – Look at how health data is structured and displayed on small screens.

Methodology

Lectures – Short, interactive sessions introducing key concepts in data visualisation, dashboards, and best practices for digital interfaces.

Workshops & Tutorial – Hands-on technical sessions using Figma & RAWGraphs to create and refine data visualisations.

Exercises – Daily practical assignments focusing on chart selection, data research, and small-screen adaptation.

Group Work – Students collaborate in small teams to design a fully responsive data dashboard.

Usability Testing & Feedback – Peer and instructor reviews to refine and improve design decisions.

Final Presentation – Teams showcase their project, explaining design choices, interactivity, and usability considerations.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
30% - Data Accuracy & Design Aesthetic Quality
25% - User Experience & Innovation
20% - Presentation & Storytelling
25% - Participation, Collaboration & Iteration & Implementation of Feedback
The students will be evaluated holistically, balancing technical execution, design, innovation, and collaboration.
