Skills you’ll learn
Motion Design is a discipline that takes graphic design principles and applies them to video production through the use of animation and visual effects. From the analogue experimental films of the 1920s to the digital interfaces we interact with today, the evolution of motion media has always been closely tied to that of technology. Thus, it is an exciting field that combines animation and graphic design principles with new cutting-edge technologies.

Animation, especially while learning a new software, can take up a lot of time; therefore, time management skills will be important. This class requires a good deal of self learning through trial and error. The most successful students from the previous modules are the ones that put in the time working and experimenting with AE.
Because this class requires time outside of class for each student to work on their projects, I would not recommend doubling up with 2 classes.
Have a super basic understanding of Figma. We will be using Figma as the main source for project briefs and showcasing project ideas (mood boards, visual references, sketches, style frames).
Software to install before class - Figma (Desktop app) - Adobe Creative Cloud - Adobe After Effects 2022 - Adobe Media Encoder 2022 - Google Drive / Google Classroom - Discord
Three weekly individual projects with graded assignments due everyday before class starts. (concept, storyboard, design, work in progress, animation, and presentations).
Project 1: Abstract Grid - Abstract geometric composition.
Project 2: Transitions - Transition between two different layouts .
Project 3: Open Brief - Continue to explore AE animations in individual proposed projects.
Class project critiques + feedbacks.
Work in progress check-ins with an hour or two in-class work time.
Hands-on demos and lectures covering topics about motion history related to the weekly project.
