Overview

3D technology has been around since the 1970s, but it's only been in the last decade that it's become accessible to people other than technically-oriented professionals. With the availability of low-cost and powerful 3D tools, the design industry has seen an emergence of 3D designers in various fields such as motion design, UI/UX, experiential, and architecture, to name a few. Although already high in demand, more industries will be looking for designers proficient in 3D as new platforms emerge that are capable of handling 3D content.

Learning highlights

  • Learn fundamental skills in creating 3D visuals from start to finish.
  • Explore the application and function of design principles in 3D space.
  • Develop a creative and technical vocabulary to properly critique and deconstruct 3D work.
  • Experiment with different rendering and animation techniques in 3D.
  • Examine past, current, and possible future trends in 3D design.

Class recap and takeaways

Prerequisites

Since we will be jumping into Cinema 4D in session 1, it will be very beneficial for students to have Cinema 4D r25 installed and make sure your computers have enough free space.

Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, illustrator, and After Effects is a plus.

Creating 3D work is an intricate and lengthy process so time management outside of class will be important.

Methodology

Each class will generally be split between presentations, exercises, and project time.

Exercises will be demoed in class. Students are expected to follow along.

Three weekly projects. (concept, design, animation, and render)

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
20% - Class Exercises
25% - Project 01: Abstract still life
25% - Project 02: Morph & Deform
30% - Project 03: Inspired by project
