Overview

Ideation is the first step in your journey to become either an entrepreneur or a product manager. This course aims to give the students the basic concepts on how the ideation process works and how it will shape their business design and improve their ability to share their vision, business concept, and product value.

Starting from design thinking, the course encourages the students to share their ideas based on what they want to do, what their interests are, as well as their mission in their professional journey.

They will learn how to summarize their thoughts and create and translate them into a pitch, a crucial skill that will enable them to share their vision with future investors or team.

Following the methodologies and design process, such as design thinking, organization, program, and commercial designs, students will be able to embody their business strategy and get things done.

Learning highlights

  • Students will learn and exercise how to design ideas starting from ZERO. ZERO to ONE is the most challenging phase, but the students will be able to reinforce their ideas by following a business design.
  • This course is not intended to judge your idea, but to prepare you to answer the following questions: Why do we need your product? Why do customers/clients need to use your product?
  • Once students complete this course, they will be able to answer both questions clearly.

Prerequisites

Hard skills: quantitative analysis, design thinking, organization design.

Soft skills: passion, vision, will, and leadership.

Methodology

Week one: Introduce the Design Thinking process at the start of the course and, immediately after, we’ll start the ideation by the students. There is no need to stick to realistic market figures; students are encouraged to open their mind and eyes to thinking out loud. Students will learn how to structure their thoughts from an abstract concept to a tangible product.

Weeks two and three: students will form a team to evolve selected ideas. At the end of the third week, they will be ready to give the pitch. Students will also learn how to give and receive feedback from their classmates.

The final, expected, outcomes are: Complete a product idea that enables the students to influence their supporters. Understand the process and frameworks to shape their ideas. Cultivate confidence to start their business or be responsible for a product.

Week 1: Start with Design Thinking, look around your world, and identify your passion. Immediately start your product, summarize it appropriately to be ready to give your pitch. Starting from individual work, the students will then work in pairs and in teams with a specific idea to develop a prototype.

Week 2: Students will develop a business model from a macro view, segmentation, targeting, etc. The goal is to form up the initial pitch by cooperating with their team members.

Week 3: Scale-up and resilience are the themes of this week. Students will evolve their ideas towards making growth in the market, but will also reflect on how their final product will have a social impact in society.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
20% - 1st week’s project
25% - 2nd week’s project
40% - 3rd week’s project
15% - Participation: 1% each day x 15 days
Baseline: Completing a project on time is the baseline to mark 50% of the evaluation each week. Valuable marks: Your classmates would evaluate valuable marks based on your pitch at the end of the week.
