Overview

This course provides a structured examination of the commercial environment in Thailand, covering the cultural, legal, financial, and operational dynamics required to enter and operate successfully in this market. Thailand’s business landscape — characterised by family conglomerates, government-linked enterprises, and deeply embedded relationship networks — demands a context-specific approach, which this course is designed to deliver.

Students work in assigned teams and apply each session directly to a real business context, culminating in a Thailand Market Entry Adaptation Plan presented at the end of the course.

Learning highlights

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to interpret Thailand’s commercial, legal, and regulatory landscape and apply that knowledge to real business decisions. Core areas of competency developed include:

  • Thai consumer behaviour, pricing psychology, and market positioning
  • Family conglomerates, competitive dynamics, and power structures
  • Capital, financing, BOI privileges, and the Foreign Business Act
  • Distribution, marketing, communication, and people management in a Thai context
  • Thai relationship culture and network principles (เส้นสาย)

Students will consolidate these competencies into a Thailand Market Entry Adaptation Plan, which they will present and defend at the end of the course.

Prerequisites

Methodology

This course is structured as a practitioner-led programme combining instructor input, peer discussion, and applied team workshop practice. Each session introduces a core topic, engages students in sharing findings and open discussion, presents the relevant conceptual framework, and concludes with a workshop in which teams apply the session directly to their chosen business context.

The course bridges the gap between global perceptions and the realities of doing business in Thailand, bringing together Thai and international students within each team. Guest speakers with direct, on-the-ground experience in the Thai market contribute to selected sessions. The course culminates in a structured running-deck workshop, followed by final team presentations.

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
40% - Final Deck & Presentation
30% - Class Participatio
30% - Pre-Work Research
