Overview

Financial Modelling can be an art form. MS Excel, Apple Numbers or Google Sheets are the canvases to build the financial blueprint of a startup. By projecting numbers, you can test and illustrate the viability of a business. As with all good designs, it should be intuitive in its structure and elegant in the way it represents complexity.

This hands-on course goes into your startup Financial Model structure, from reviewing the input of core assumptions and key metrics influencing costs and revenues to testing how realistic your financing strategy and projection scenarios are. Very interactive and participative, each project will be reviewed and discussed through the scrutinising lens of the mighty Spreadsheet!

Learning highlights

  • Translating a startup concept into coherent financial numbers
  • Building sound financial projections
  • Structuring a good model to support your financing strategy
  • Transforming a business idea into a working financial model
  • Demystifying financial statements

Prerequisites

- Choose a preferred spreadsheet model for the course from MS Excel, Apple Numbers or Google Sheets.

- Come prepared with your startup project basic model if you already have one, a business idea to develop, or be ready to join a team on someone else’s project.

Methodology

Through interactive lectures and a practical hands-on approach, we will go into the key components that make a good model and apply the Financial Metrics and KPIs of your Capstone startup/project to bring its financial model to life.

How will it stand up to the test of your lecturer and peers? The students will work in small teams on a P&L model based on their capstone or a startup/project of their choice and present their working models to the class during the last week.

But before you jump straight into modelling, and to start you on the right footing, you will build an understanding of financial statements and put numbers into perspective with a real-life case study.

To balance theory and practice while keeping it interesting and interactive, the sessions are structured into the following parts:

-Quick Quiz: recap of previous day’s session (weeks I-II)

-Knowledge: theory part of the course (weeks I-II)

- Fieldwork: individual case studies - each student presents the financial statements of a publicly listed company (week I)

- Teamwork: work with your team to develop the financial model of a startup project or business idea (weeks I-III)

Grading

The final grade will be composed of the following criteria:
10% - Quizzes
20% - Participation
20% - Fieldwork Presentations
20% - Teamwork
30% - Final Presentation
