What Happens When Students Stop Fearing Leadership

I walked into the last session of Thierry de Beyssac's Conscious Business & Leadership module not quite knowing what to expect. What I witnessed over the next few hours quietly redefined what I believe education can do.

One by one, students stood up and presented their personal leadership plans, not polished corporate decks, not rehearsed pitches, but honest, vulnerable, and deeply considered accounts of who they are as leaders, what they've struggled with, and who they intend to become.

“I thought I was already a good leader. Then I took this course.”

Heard in nearly every final presentation.

That sentence, repeated across presentations in different voices and accents, felt like the most honest measure of a course's impact. Not grades. Not certificates. But the moment a student realises the gap between who they thought they were and who they're capable of being.

Leadership is not a title. It's a choice.

One of the most powerful ideas woven through the programme is deceptively simple: leadership doesn't begin with a team or a company. It begins with yourself. True leadership means refusing to move through life passively, not being carried along by fear, inertia, or the expectations of others, but making a conscious choice about how you show up every day.

For many of these students, talented engineers and strategists who've spent years mastering technical disciplines, this reframe was quietly revolutionary. Because it meant that leadership wasn't something they had to wait to be granted. It was something they could practise right now, in every interaction, in every decision, in every moment they chose honesty over comfort.

The programme: what it is and why it matters

Conscious Business & Leadership is a 10-day, 30-hour immersive module within Harbour Space's Strategic Management Master's programme. It's designed for future-ready professionals working in real companies, particularly those from high-tech backgrounds stepping into leadership roles in start-ups and innovation-driven organisations.

We live in a world shaped by complexity, artificial intelligence, and systemic disruption. Technical skills are necessary, but no longer sufficient. The companies building the future need people who can learn continuously, build trust under pressure, navigate tension without losing themselves, and lead from a place of purpose rather than anxiety.

This course was built precisely for this gap. It develops what the programme calls inner capacities, the mindsets and relational skills that drive outward results. Over ten intensive days, students work on:

• Self-Leadership & Responsibility — Moving from blame to ownership; becoming the person others trust to step up.
• Authentic Communication — Saying what needs to be said, listening beyond what is spoken, turning difficult conversations into moments of real connection.
• Trust-Building Through Commitments — Mastering the art of making, honouring, and renegotiating commitments with integrity.
• Collaborative Negotiation — Shifting from competition to co-creation; understanding the needs behind positions.
• Emotional Agility — Recognising emotional patterns in yourself and others; leading calmly through tension and change.

The final project: a plan for becoming

Instead of an exam or a case study, students close the programme with something far more demanding: a personal Conscious Leader Growth Plan. They reflect on their values, their patterns, their blind spots, and the specific commitments they are making, to themselves and to the people around them, going forward.

These weren't abstract exercises. Every student connected their growth plan to something real: their internship, their start-up, their team, their relationships. The presentations were personal in the best possible way, grounded, honest, and surprisingly courageous.

About the instructor

Thierry de Beyssac has spent over 26 years helping global organisations build high-performance cultures, first at Hewitt and Aon Hewitt, and since 2012 as a Partner at Axialent, working with leaders and teams across the world to align people, culture, and leadership with business strategy. He brings rigour, warmth, and genuine care to everything he facilitates.

Why this matters to Harbour Space

Harbour.Space was founded on the belief that the most important investment you can make is in people. Not just in their skills, but in their ability to grow, adapt, and lead with integrity in a world that rewards those qualities more than ever before.

Conscious Business & Leadership is one of the clearest expressions of that belief. It sits inside a rigorous, career-focused Master's programme, and yet it asks students to slow down, look inward, and ask harder questions than any technical curriculum demands.

The students who stood up in that final class weren't just more capable. They were more themselves. More aware. More intentional. And that, more than any skill or credential, is what will make them extraordinary, as professionals, as collaborators, and as human beings.

That's the kind of education we're proud to offer.
