Carlos Labarta was a principal of an innovative architecture and urban design firm in Zaragoza, in addition to lecturing widely at various universities in Spain.
With a master’s degree in design studies from Harvard University, secured while a Fulbright scholar, and a PhD in architecture from the University of Navarra, Labarta garnered wide-spread recognition and awards for his architectural projects and urban design plans. He is committed to practice, pedagogy, and research in the areas of architecture and urbanism, and also served on the board of Fundacion J.L. Zazurca, an NGO providing services to people with mental disabilities.
On his fellowship, Labarta anticipated exchanging ideas with leading architects and academics in the areas of architecture and urban design, with a focus on projects that redefine the urban landscape through outstanding interventions, recovering abandoned areas, and promoting urban renewal via public-private ventures. In addition, he visited academic institutions to learn about architectural training in the U.S. as well as to establish new academic and professional collaborations.
