Living in Barcelona

Sun, surf and Spanish food. What’s not to love about living in Barcelona? We can’t think of a better city than this to inspire, delight and stimulate our students outside the university walls.

Harbour. Space is situated in one of the greatest cultural capitals of the world. With the architectural genius of Gaudi scattered across town, its many museums, galleries and cultural events, its rich history and cosmopolitan feel, its great food and not to forget — the beach, Barcelona is a natural home to international students.

One of Barcelona’s best features is its situation on the Mediterranean coast. Besides the harbour, there’s a good stretch of beach along the city, lined with food and drink places. Summer is long and hot in Spain, so there’s always plenty of time to enjoy it.

Language

In Barcelona people speak Catalan and Castilian Spanish. Castilian Spanish is the common tongue in Spain and Latin America, and language most people learn to live in Barcelona. Many people speak English too, though everyone needs some basic Spanish to get by in daily life. Note that all courses at Harbour.Space are in English.

food & drink

Tapas! Paella! Cava! Don’t we all love Spanish food. Languid siesta times are great for multi-course feasts, and la cena (dinner) is served long after sunset, often until midnight. Eating out is tasty and affordable almost everywhere, just avoid the Ramblas: the famous street charges steep tourist prices.

around town

  • Citymapper
    Everybody’s favourite city transport app is available for Barcelona. It shows you all routes, prices, travel time and even the weather.
  • Metro
    The Metro in Barcelona gets you pretty much everywhere quickly.
  • Bicing
    The city’s cycle hire scheme is a great success, although it’s more popular going downhill than up.
  • Bus
    Buses take you anywhere you need to go.
  • Taxi
    Taxi’s are widely available, reasonably priced and get you home safe at night.
